Build a Plan of Action and Get Prepared
Buying a home will probably rank as one of the biggest personal investments one can make. Being organized and in control of your needs and desires will contribute significantly to obtaining a home of your choice at an acceptable price with the least amount of stress. It’s important to anticipate the steps required to successfully achieve your housing goal and to build a plan of action that gets you there.
Before you can build a plan of action, take the time to lay the groundwork for your decision-making process.
First of all, you must ask yourself; do I really need a real estate agent and how do I go about choosing the right one? Simply click on the photo or corresponding text below in order to help you answer these important questions.

Secondly, ask yourself what home price range can I afford? If you are not sure, reach out to a lender and obtain a loan pre-approval. If you are in need of some lender recommendations and you've opted to work with an agent, he/she can certainly provide you with some suggestions. Reaching out to a lender will help establish your home affordability, so you won't waiste your valuable time viewing homes beyond the scope of your price range. A pre-approval can also help you to alleviate some of the anxieties that are associated with home purchasing by providing a level of certainty since you'll know exactly what amount you qualify for, the interest rate, your monthly mortgage payment and what you'll need for a down payment.
Thirdly, ask yourself what areas are the most appealing to you, and in particular, what locations are best suited for you and/or your family. Things to consider:
- convenient location for all family members
- proximity to work and/or school
- crime rate of neighborhood
- local transportation
- types of homes in the neighborhood, for example condos, townhouses, co-ops, newly constructed homes, etc.
